Diabetes Education Classes
The Mission:
To make you a partner in preventing diabetes complications through knowledge and understanding
The Goals of Diabetes Education at SMCC are to:
• Prevent the complications of:
• Heart Attack
• Stroke
• Blindness
• Kidney damage
• Amputations
• Create awareness of new, upcoming and current therapies.
• Encourage you to be actively in control of your diabetes.
• Help you understand how to make choices in food that promote better blood sugar control.
• Learn what routine medical tests you need, when you need them and what the results mean.
Controlling how much you eat is always a component of controlling the blood sugar. the "D" (diet) word however, is not one many of us like. In July, the Diabetes Support group met for a pot luck picnic. At that event, a person who had diabetes for over 30 years stood up to comment that he didn't know people with diabetes could eat so good!
In an attempt to offer "good food" for fewer calories and/or carbs, continue to check this website for favorite recipes from our Diabetes Support group members. Remember, as you look at various recipes, look at the nutritional analysis to determine if it fits with your meal plan.
What to look for in the Nutritional Analysis:
1. Does it identify a measurable portion for a serving? Example: 3/4 cup is measurable where 1/16 of a recipe is very difficult to measure. Look for a measureable serving size.
2. Does it list how many calories/serving? Are you willing to stay within the serving size for that number of calories? Example: 1/10 of a pie crust has 140 calories. Are you really going to cut a pie into eight pieces instead of 10? If so, you are getting 175 calories. Do the math.
3. How many grams of carbohydrate does it have? Adjust the carbohydrates for the "real" serving size you are going to use. Then compare the carbohydrate grams
to your "budget of carbs for the meal.
