Over 40 years ago, a group of physicians from ACH Hospital and Broadway Hospital saw the need to form a group practice to provide top-notch medical care to the people in Shawnee and surrounding areas. These physicians were among the best in their specialties. They specialized in internal medicine, general surgery, family practice, pediatrics and allergy.
Later in the 1960s, ACH Hospital and Broadway Hospital merged to form the Shawnee Medical Center Hospital and the Shawnee Medical Center Clinic was born. The group of physicians who founded SMCC were Dr. Jerold Kethley, Dr. Frank Howard, Dr. James Louden, Dr. A.M. Bell, Dr. John Hayes, Dr. Jake Jones, Dr. Roy Kelley and Dr. August Gauchat.
The clinic first opened its doors on December 4, 1967 by renting space at the hospital's west end. On April 15, 1977, construction of a new building for the clinic began. On May 8, 1978, SMCC officially moved into the two-story structure at its present location. The new location had over 46,000 square feet, which was more than twice its former site. It also housed a pharmacy, a laboratory and a number of diagnostic machines to serve the 20 physicians.
Over the years, more physicians, specialties and ancillary services have been added.
In 1994, SMCC further expanded and added another 22,000 square feet. The extra footage provided space for optometry, more doctors' offices, and expanded areas for laboratory, radiology, physical therapy and administrative offices.
The latest expansion came in 2000 when an additional 8,800 square feet were added to house an expanded pediatric department, a training room and medical records. Our current total footage is more than 80,000 square feet. And our latest ancillary services include Imaging, CAT scan and Nuclear Medicine.
In 2007, SMCC celebrated its 40th anniversary. Because of the visionary foresight of the founding physicians, and the hard work of past and current physicians and employees, SMCC has grown to become a premier multi-specialty health facility in the state of Oklahoma. The quality health care and services we provide are among the best in the state.
